We always celebrated Dad’s birthday on Thanksgiving Day, even after he entered a nursing home . As years went on , these events took on a 1meaning for me : A traditional birthday party for Dad , and thanking for all that he had been doing to me in my life . When we knew it might be his 2birthday, the whole family decided to 3together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home .
Dad was a good story-teller and here was the 4he had had .During a quiet moment , I announced it was now Dad’s 5to listen to stories for a change . I wanted everyone to tell Dad what we loved about him . The room became 6. Then one after another , people told stories from their hearts , while Dad 7with tears in eyes . People 8kinds of stories — stories about when they were little , stories about when Dad was young , and stories that shared family treasures .
The stories 9. Everyone seemed to have more than one story . Even the little grandchildren couldn’t10to tell Dad why they loved him . For a man who had been kind to so many people in his life , here was our 11to celebrate him . A few months later , at Dad’s memorial service , we more fully realized what we had 12Dad that night . Those are the stories people 13tell at a funeral (葬禮)after a loved one is no longer 14to hear the words . They tell stories , full of 15. But we had given those memories to Dad in his 16, and we had told them through laughter , accompanied by hugs and joys . He had them to 17and roll over in his mind during his last days and months .
Words do18, and they are enough . We just need to say them or to speak them 19to the ones we love . That’s the way to 20love and our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life .

Lose-Win is weak. It’s easy to get stepped on. It’s easy to be the nice guy. It’s easy to give in, all in the name of being a peacemaker.
A girl named Jenny once told me about her 1 in the world of Lose-Win during her eighth-grade year before she finally broke 2:
My 3with my mom all started one day 4she said to me sarcastically (諷刺地) “Wow, you’re surely lively today.” I 5it so literally (字面地) that then and there I decided to close off from her and never 6back to her. So every time she would say something 7I disagreed with her I would just say. “Okay, 8you want, Mom.” But I really got cold quickly. And my9began to build. One night I talked to my mom about the school homework and she said, “Oh, that’s 10 ” and then went back to mop the floor.
“Don’t you ever 11?” I thought. But I didn’t say anything and stormed off. She had no idea I was 12upset. She would have been willing to talk to me had I 13her bow important it was to me.
At last I just blew up. “Mom, this has got to 14 . You tell me everything you want me to do and I just do it because it’s 15than if fighting. Well, I’m sick of it.” This all came as a 16to her.
After my blow up, we felt like we were 17all over in our relationship. But it’s getting better all the lime. We discuss things now and I always 18my feelings with her.
If you adopt Lose-Win as your basic 19toward life, then people will wipe their dirty feet on you. You’11 also be 20your true feelings deep inside. And that’s not healthy.

I was going hunting along the motorway the other day when there was a sudden bang and I almost fell off my motorbike. It had a hole in the front tyre and it’s not easy to1 a bike without any air in the tyre.
I 2 stop without falling off luckily, but I still had the problem of what to do with the hole. A motorbike isn’t like a car; you can’t just change a wheel and go on your way. Now, you have to take the wheel off, find the hole, cover it with a piece of rubber, and then put the wheel back together again. Usually it costs you a lot of time and you get very dirty. As I didn’t have any3, I set to work. It didn’t 4 long to get the wheel off and it wasn’t hard to5 the tyre from the wheel. The fun really began when I had to put the wheel back on the bike. You have no6 how easy it is to7 small pieces of motorbike in the dark.
In the 8 the bike was all together again but then I realized I hadn’t got a pump, so how was I going to blow up the tyre? Fortunately, a9 motorist saw me and pulled up. He lent me his pump and I was soon ready to start off again. Next time I am in the motorbike shop I really must remember to buy myself a small pump though I don’t know 10 I am going to carry it on the motorbike.

Anger Management
Throughout the school day, students often go1many different emotions. One common emotion is2. How we3anger usually shows what kind of temper we have.4, one of my best friends had a really bad5. Whenever she6angry, she would pass out because she didn’t know how to7her anger in a healthy way. Lately, however, she has been8“ anger management.” She has been learning9to express her anger in a way that is healthy and constructive.
Students can improve their bad temper10learning anger management. There are11anger management strategies to12temper. The goal is to13the one that works best for you and to use it again and again14your anger management strategy becomes a habit. A common strategy students can begin to15are things like self-talk where you say16phrases to yourself such as “keep cool,” “don’t worry about it,” and “ it will be all right.” Other anger management17include counting backwards from ten18a steady pace and, as always, walking away from the situation that is making you mad. No matter19kind of anger management strategy you choose, it should help20your bad temper into one that helps you deal with anger in a healthy way!

When I was growing up, I always gave my mom an apron (圍裙)on her birthday.I wanted my own mom —1that apron I'd just given her, of course —to2me at the end of each afternoon bearing a plate of home-baked3as she waited breathlessly to hear about my4day at school.

This is a real life story of the engineers building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA back in 1870. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years. In 1869, a creative engineer named John Roebling was1by an idea to build a spectacular bridge2New York with the Long Island.3, bridge-building experts throughout the world thought that this was impossible and told Roebling to forget the idea.
Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. After much discussion and persuasion he4to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge5could be built. The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway, a tragic accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which6him not being able to talk or walk.
7his handicap, Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning8to complete the bridge and his mind was still as9as ever. He didn’t want to 10. Suddenly an idea11him. All he could do was move one12and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he13developed a code of communication with his wife.
For 13 years Washington tapped out his14with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands for his determination not to be 15by circumstances. It stands too as a monument to the love and16of his wife who for 13 years long17decoded(解碼)the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.
Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves a(n)18goal. Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles(障礙) seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that19that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence(堅持), no matter what the20are.

The other kids teased her because of the way she3and because she wanted to be a sportswriter some day. No matter what she did, she was teased for being “4.”
That’s5she started writing down things that she liked in a notebook. “It was like a friend, and it6me that there are good things,7everything around me is unpleasant,” she says. She copied the list over and over,8new things every day.
One day, she decided to9her list with some of the girls in her class, hoping they would think it was as much fun as she did. But10, they made her feel stupid again. “They laughed at me,” she remembers, “I was ashamed, and I11doing it.” Here comes the12part. When she was in 10th grade, Kipfer found her old notebook and decided to13where she left off. “It was like a diary, like a photograph of my life,” she says. She started writing to publishers, asking them if they’d be interested in printing her list as a book.
She kept writing to one company14, because she liked the types of books it printed. “He kept saying, ‘It’s just a list, what am I supposed to do with it?’” “You’re not15to do anything with it. It’s16supposed to remind people of something they did that was really17.”
Finally, the publisher18to turn Kipfer’s list into a book, which sold more than million copies! 14,000 Things to Be Happy About even19it to be New York Times Best Sellers list.20being a best-selling author, Kipfer also went to realize her dream of becoming a sports editor at the Chicago Tribune.
